Bachir Atallah ( a New Hampshire real estate attorney who has been an American citizen for 10 years) and his wife, Jessica Fakhri, say they were stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Vermont on Sunday while returning from a brief family trip."I literally drove my car to Canada for the weekend, and on the way back, I was treated like a criminal,"
"Oh, we don't know. It's our government." Like, okay, it's your government. You don't know. You just don't want to share it with me. He's like, "Well, I advise you to get a redress number." A redress number is actually if you have, let's say a name that's a special name like my name, like my last name, they advise frequent travelers to get a redress number. I said I have that. I do have a redress number so they know who I amю I felt harassed. I was in handcuffs. I was in a very cold environment. They did not give me my shoes. They did not give us jackets, nothing. And they actually did not allow me to speak with my attorney, at least for the first three and a half hours.
First of all, they didn't even talk to us or tell us any reasons. And they had the audacity to put that statement, you know, saying that my brother's account is false and all these things and then saying that this is routine protocol.Do you think it's routine to be handcuffed, even when you are fully cooperative with the authorities without any criminal record being abused this way, thrown in a cold cell, separated from your wife, humiliated, insulted, your rights all violated, is that considered routine protocol for CBP? Is that what is becoming routine to us in America?
Federal immigration authorities have been empowered to carry out President Donald Trump's plans for mass deportations, a key campaign promise that has garnered significant support from his Republican base. While Trump has emphasized that most deportations will focus on individuals with criminal records, recent reports have highlighted concerns, as people with valid documentation and no criminal convictions have been detained. Despite the president's vow to prioritize serious criminals, numerous green card holders, U.S. citizens, and legal permanent residents have found themselves caught up in Trump's hardline crackdown on immigration.
He was charged with illegally entering Florida as an "unauthorized alien" under a controversial state law that has previously been temporarily blocked by a federal judge. Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, 20, was arrested Wednesday by Florida Highway Patrol when the car he was riding in was pulled over for speeding, according to an arrest affidavit and his attorney, Mutaqee Akbar
Leon County Judge LaShawn Riggans examined his birth certificate and Social Security card, declaring the documents authentic and stating there was no probable cause for the misdemeanor charge."In looking at it, and feeling it, and holding it up to the light, the court can clearly see the watermark to show that this is indeed an authentic document," Riggans said.
It appears the immigration detainer was applied to Lopez-Gomez as part of the traffic stop. “ICE stated they will place a detainer on both subjects,” reads a Leon County arrest affidavit Akbar gave to CNN. ICE uses the provision to ask law enforcement agencies to notify it “before releasing a removable alien” and to “hold the alien for up to 48 hours” to give its umbrella agency, the Homeland Security Department, time to take the migrant into custody.
. The American citizen – born in Grady County, Georgia, where he lives in the city of Cairo – was crossing into Florida for his work in construction in Tallahassee, about 45 minutes from home. Still, the case highlights concerns over racial profiling and immigrants’ rights as the White House aims to vastly slow arrivals at the border and eject undocumented immigrants, from children to suspected criminals, and judges weigh the legality of a mounting number of such cases.Lopez-Gomez, who speaks an indigenous language and is not fluent in English or Spanish, was arrested with two men under a Florida law that took effect in February and was temporarily blocked April 4 by a federal judge, who barred its enforcement until Friday, court records show. It was not immediately clear why the suspended law was in play.
The law touted by Florida’s Republican leaders was designed to discourage undocumented immigrants from entering the state, then blocked after plaintiffs argued it violates a constitutional provision that makes immigration enforcement a federal responsibility. The state judge in Lopez-Gomez’s case this week verified his US birth certificate and found no probable cause for charging him with crossing into Florida illegally, court records show, but said she didn’t have jurisdiction to release him because of an ICE hold.
While “no US citizen is a proper subject of a detainer, … many US citizens have been the mistaken subject of ICE detainers and even prolonged detention and removal, despite their assertion of citizenship,” according to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, a non-profit working on such issues since 1979.

A Texas doctor who has been treating children in a measles outbreak was shown on video with a measles rash on his face in a clinic a week before Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. met him and praised him as an “extraordinary” healer.Dr. Ben Edwards appeared in the video posted March 31 by the anti-vaccine group Kennedy once led, Children’s Health Defense. In it, Edwards appears wearing scrubs and talking with parents and children in a makeshift clinic he set up in Seminole, Texas, ground zero of the outbreak that has sickened hundreds of people and killed three, including two children.Edwards is asked whether he had measles, and he responded, “Yes,” then said his infection started the day before the video was recorded.“Yesterday was pretty achy. Little mild fever. Spots came in the afternoon. Today, I woke up feeling good,” Edwards said in the video.Measles is most contagious for about four days before and four days after the rash appears and is one of the world's most contagious diseases, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Doctors and public health experts said Edwards' decision to go into the clinic put children, their parents and their community at risk because he could have spread it to others. They said there was no scenario in which Edwards' conduct would be reasonable.

Federal agents showed up April 7 unannounced and without a judicial warrant at Russell Elementary and Lillian Street Elementary in the Florence-Graham neighborhood of South Los Angeles. They asked to speak with five students collectively, ranging from first-graders to sixth-graders. But school principals denied access.
According to L.A. Unified Supt. Alberto Carvalho, the agents falsely claimed the students’ families had given permission for the contact. The agents identified themselves as being with Homeland Security Investigations.
The Department of Homeland Security said agents were conducting "welfare checks" on the students. But Padilla and Schiff, in a letter Friday, said the actions "terrorized hundreds of thousands of students across Los Angeles and undermine public trust." . The letter is addressed to to Acting Executive Associate Director Robert Hammer of Homeland Security Investigations, an arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The senators requested a briefing on the nature, scale and objectives of the welfare checks, as well as policies and protocols surrounding the checks on children. "We do not understand why, if you obtained evidence that led you to believe that these children were in danger, your agency has not made a referral to the California Department of Social Services and did not coordinate with the school in advance of the 'welfare check' regarding potential child welfare or trafficking concerns," the senators wrote.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, told The Times that the agents were ensuring that children who arrived unaccompanied at the border “are safe and not being exploited, abused and sex trafficked.” “Any assertions that officers lied are false,” she said previously. “Our law enforcement clearly identified themselves and made it clear this was a welfare check and not an immigration enforcement action.”The senators had met this week with officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations. It appears they left with more questions than answers. According to their letter, Padilla and Schiff are requesting information on whether agents have arrested, detained or deported any formerly unaccompanied children or their sponsors in connection with the welfare checks in California and nationwide. They also want to know what steps Immigration and Customs Enforcement is taking to address their agents' conduct, including finding out why they lied about receiving permission to speak with the children. "These types of 'welfare checks' scare children and their family members, rather than promote their safety," the senators wrote. "We urge you to end any efforts to conduct 'welfare checks' on school premises and to ensure that ICE agents do not attempt to visit or enter schools without a warrant."
